Market Spotlight: Dallas

Today we’re speaking with Marcia, Shiftgig’s General Manager for our Dallas office. Welcome, Marcia!

Marcia, thanks for joining us today. Can you catch us up on our Dallas market?

Dallas has been a marketing center, and today trade remains the core of the economy. The city ranks among the top wholesale markets of the United States in apparel, gifts, and furniture, and hosts a large number of trade shows each year. More oil companies are headquartered in Dallas than in any other U.S. city. Corporations from all over the US have recently relocated their headquarters here.

Wow! It sounds like Dallas is growing fast! What else is unique about the Dallas market?

There are a lot of exciting businesses and events in the Dallas area. In the heart of downtown Dallas, the district is made up of 19 city blocks and nearly 70 acres. Here, you’ll find museums, venues, and galleries celebrating various cultures and genres of fine art.  Developed in 2009, the Dallas Arts District is the largest in the nation. The Galleria, a popular Dallas mall, goes all-out for the holiday season. Every year, the Galleria puts up the nation’s tallest indoor Christmas tree in the middle of the mall’s indoor ice rink. Boasting almost 250,000 lights and over 10,000 ornaments, the Galleria’s Christmas tree is a popular holiday sight for locals and tourists alike. The State Fair of Texas, where the annual 16-day exposition draws nearly 3 million people, serves as an amusement park and civic center.

It Sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to in the Dallas area! Are you seeing any business trends specific to the area?

Low unemployment rate coupled with numerous corporations moving into the area makes Dallas a very competitive job market. Pay expectations have increased over the past 18 months.

That’s Interesting. What’s currently happening in the city that you can share? Are you getting ready to help businesses staff any large events?

Yes! Football season is huge in Dallas – go Cowboys!  We will be staffing bartenders and cooks for the games. We’re also working the State Fair of Texas, which runs September 30-October 23! We staff concession workers for this fair.

We also have several large concerts coming up at American Airlines, like Carrie Underwood, Adele, and Kanye West. For these exciting concerts we staff bartenders and cooks. We also staff bartenders for the Oktoberfest and Grapefest festivals.

Our thanks to Marcia for giving us a peek into Shiftgig’s operations in Dallas. Check back on our blog next month to learn about another Shiftgig market.
