A new report from KPMG surveyed more than 800 tech leaders and found that Chicago is in the top 10 of technology innovation hubs worldwide.
This isn’t news, given Chicago has been growing as a tech epicenter for years now. We asked some of our executives why they feel our city is the ideal place to plant our roots.
“Chicago has great talent given the top universities and strong engineering programs at schools just a few hours drive. Our reasonable cost of living, diverse cultures and breadth of entertainment make Chicago a magnet for Millennials. Chicago is also home to many potential enterprise clients across a diverse mix of corporate businesses. We have as many Fortune 500 companies as any other large city. Plus, it’s only a two-hour flight from any major city east of the Rockies, making it easy to meet large enterprise clients in person.” – Eddie Lou
“Chicago’s position as a railroad hub made it a de-facto Internet hub when the fiber optic Internet backbone lines were laid along railroad easements. Compared with the coasts, Chicago has plenty of fresh water, no earthquakes and no hurricanes; allowing for greater focus on sustainable technology.” – Jeff Pieta
“Chicago software developers embrace grand visions, but at the same time understand that it takes hard work and patience to build great things. There is less focus on quick exits and more focus on building impactful ventures.” – Brian Eagan
“”As a human capital professional, I have seen the Chicago tech market grow significantly over the past 10 years. The positive impact that growth has had on people throughout the city is a key to its continued growth. Whether it be at tech meet-ups, one of our multiple incubators or throughout the buzzing tech company lunchrooms city-wide, people are energized by the sheer volume of opportunities that the scene is providing. It’s an exciting time to be in tech in Chicago.” – David Loiselle
“Having relatively recently moved to Chicago from the East Coast, one of the things I found that distinguishes Chicago’s tech scene is people’s genuine desire to help each other succeed. There’s a willingness to contribute to the success of the ecosystem and a pride in being part of growing it that is very special.” – Michael Yoch
“Chicago is an ideal city for tech companies to start up, transplant and grow. We have a thriving economy, we’re home to over 10,000 tech companies already, and we offer premier CS programs that turn out talented developers every semester. But more importantly, Chicago is a great place to live no matter what your situation is – you can enjoy all the seasons and eat the best pizza in the world everyday!” – Jill Erickson
