Ready, Set, Shop: Cyber Monday is Here!

We all know that today is Cyber Monday… but do you know how it began?

The National Retail Federation says the term was coined 11 years ago. Consider the state of technology in 2005 – most consumers only had high-speed Internet access at work. So, they spent the Monday after Thanksgiving shopping online for those remaining items they didn’t purchase on Black Friday.

Since its beginnings, it has grown to one of the biggest shopping days of the year, with almost all stores slashing prices and offering great shipping deals. According to the NRF, 36% of consumers are planning to shop online today. And, those consumers are expected to spend in excess of $3.3 billion today, according to Adobe. You can read more about predictions in this article here.

Think that Cyber Monday gives stores a break on the staffing front? Think again. While the brick-and-mortar locations themselves may not be packed today, their warehouses will be.

Cyber Monday means retailers must staff up their warehousing labor to accommodate all that goes into packing up those items and getting them ready to ship. Logistics companies must then be ready to load, drive and deliver all those purchases to homes across the country. On-demand workers are a huge part of this workforce, as the need for their services is very temporary.

For everyone scooping up the deals online today…happy shopping!
