According to the Harvard Business Review, proactively seeking advice is vital to developing leadership and decision-making skills. In this series we’ll talk to gig workers finding work using the Shiftgig app to hear what advice they have for other Specialists.

PART 1: Be Your Own Brand

For this first post in this series, we chatted with an experiential marketing Specialist who has been finding gig work since 2015. This specialist utilized her experience to become a team lead, and likes to share information she’s learned from being in the gig economy the past few years. Here are four pieces of advice she has for gig workers:


Independance and drive are important when working in the gig economy. “You’re working for yourself,” she says. “You have to find jobs, work them and get paid. You’re your own brand and are only as good as your last gig.” She mentioned that Specialists represent not only Shiftgig when they’re working, but themselves as well. It’s important to make a great impression on the job.


“I have to love what I do, I have to believe in it. Whatever my career is it has to align with my personal goals in life.” Show you believe in your work by smiling or saying hello to colleagues. Whether you’re bussing tables or working for a charity, believing in yourself and your job can make a huge difference in your attitude — and clients will take notice.


Using the Shiftgig app, workers are able to claim shifts based around their own schedules.  “I’m really big on owning my own time,” she says. She makes sure the shifts she works are productive, whether it’s by learning something new or creating a memorable experience.


Helping and coaching other gig workers makes a difference in not only their lives, but your own. If you see someone confused or struggling with a task, offer to lend a hand. She also suggests finding ways to learn more about your position, the client or Shiftgig itself. By gaining knowledge she was able to be a better employee, and offer good feedback and information to those around her.
