Are You the Perfect Gig Worker and You Don’t Even Know it?

In the United States alone, there are four million gig workers with that number expected to grow to almost eight million by 2020. With its growing popularity, misnomers about working in the gig economy have emerged. Findings from our 2018 Profile of a Gig Worker report uncovered some new truths about being a gig worker. In fact, you might even be the perfect gig worker but you don’t even know it.


Do you already have a job?

One of the biggest misconceptions around gig work is that people picking up gigs are unemployed. Our report found that three quarters  of survey respondents interested in doing gig work have a part-time or full-time job.

Did you go to/are you in college?

Our findings showed us that 58% of those picking up business-based gig work have an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees. Our survey found that gig workers are a highly educated group.

Is there a financial goal you’re saving for?

Seventy four percent  of survey respondents utilize gig work to meet a financial goal, such as helping to support themselves/their family, supplement income or to save for a goal or life event.

Does ridesharing feel like the only option for gig work?

With the rise of ridesharing apps it can feel like the only option for working in the gig economy is by being a driver, which doesn’t fit in everyone’s’ lives. Our survey respondents said the number one reason reason they do ridesharing gig work is because they felt unsafe.
