Market Watch: Dallas Becomes Gig Economy Hub

According to a September 2016 article in the Dallas News, more than a third of Dallas residents have worked as independent contractors or gig workers, and 97 percent of those contractors reported that they were satisfied with the experience.

With the trend moving toward workers — and Millennials in particular — looking to work when they want, where they want, the gig economy is becoming more and more appealing for DFW residents.

Shiftgig began operating in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2016, and since then has seen an uptick in the number of workers and clients signing on to the app. Here, we compile a few of the popular roles Shiftgig Dallas has available right now, and a little bit about each role. We hope you’ll explore these options, and sign up for a shift soon!

Servers and Dishwashers
Food service roles are always in demand in the Dallas area. If you have back or front of the house experience in a restaurant, Shiftgig likely has a role for you. In particular, there are usually a number of shifts available for servers and dishwashers at local restaurants and large-scale venues.

Servers can expect shifts that include banquet serving, food running, and buffet-style service. Depending on the client, taking a shift as a server will likely include some of the following tasks:

  • Clearly communicate with supervisor and other servers on the floor

Dishwasher roles through Shiftgig are generally what you would expect. The role will most likely require Specialists to clean dishes and kitchen equipment, glassware, pots and pans, and maintain kitchen work areas in an orderly condition. Dishwashing may be a combination of by hand or with a commercial dishwashing machine.

Store Remodel Workers

Ever wonder how your favorite big box store is able to change their look and feel so quickly for each season and holiday? For most of them, they’re hiring a team to come into the store after hours to put away the last season’s decor, and prepare for the next. Additionally, teams are hired when stores choose to remodel their look in a more permanent way — like moving shelving, or rearranging sections of the store.

If this sounds like work that’s interesting to you, sign-up to be a Remodel Worker through Shiftgig. One thing to note: You’ll need to be able to be on your feet for longer periods of time, and have the ability to move and lift heavy items. Interested? Here are a few of the specific tasks this role entails:

  • Moving beams, grids, and shelving
  • Rotating stock, building seasonal product displays
  • Moving store racks and display assembly sections, sometimes with provided equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
